Nexterm
Your servers. Your workspace.
A self-hosted workspace for terminals, remote desktops, files and server monitoring. This maintained custom edition of Nexterm focuses on a clear interface, efficient background work and reliable session handling.
Source · Installation · Development · Security · MIT license
A workspace for everyday operations
| Area | Included |
|---|---|
| Connections | SSH, Telnet, RDP, VNC and Proxmox consoles; tabs, split views and shared sessions |
| Files | SFTP browsing, editing, permissions, bounded uploads and ZIP downloads |
| Monitoring | Resource observations, processes and history, with freshness and error states |
| Organization | Folders, tags, identities, organizations and access permissions |
| Access | Password sign-in, two-factor authentication, passkeys, OIDC and LDAP integrations |
| Workflow | Snippets, scripts, optional AI assistance, session recordings and backups |
What this edition changes
- Session continuity: browser reattachment to an existing backend session, readiness feedback and heartbeats independent of browser timer throttling.
- A clearer interface: original purple terminal artwork, readable controls, OS icons, responsive navigation and account-scoped preferences.
- Lighter loading: editors, settings, integrations and the complete icon catalog load when needed.
- Useful monitoring: bounded collection work, independent target failures and explicit stale-data states.
- Bounded background work: queued file operations, stream backpressure, asynchronous backups and atomic recording compression.
Reconnection depends on the backend and remote process remaining alive. Retained terminal history is bounded. See compatibility and limitations.
Build and deploy
The maintained deployment uses Dockerfile.homelab. It layers this server and compiled web client onto a digest-pinned runtime, preserving the existing native engine and its protocol.
With Node.js 22.23+, Yarn Classic 1.22 and Docker available:
git clone https://git.aaran.cloud/aaran/nexterm.git
cd nexterm
cd client
yarn install --frozen-lockfile
yarn build
cd ..
docker build -f Dockerfile.homelab --build-arg REVISION="$(git rev-parse HEAD)" -t nexterm-custom:local .
Use the installation guide for a new instance. Existing deployments use the deployment runbook, preserving their data volume and encryption key. Release observations are recorded in installation guide.
The repository is public to staff who can reach the network Git service. Reading and cloning do not require a repository account; contributing changes requires sign-in. The build creates a local image; deployment is a separate step.
